Nothing worse than knowing how it ends

I was thinking about X-Men last night (cause that’s just what I do now) and you know what, it’s all very Harry Potter. Secret school led by benevolent figure with great power randomly plucks ‘gifted youngsters’ from every day life and teaches them to control their powers – and sometimes some of them have adventures.

In other news, heartbreak! I got a call from Telstra today informing me that I need a new mobile as my phone will basically stop working in October. I wasn’t surprised, I’ve been expecting it for months – ever since Gabe Saporta tweeted a pic of the letter he received from T-Mobile about the same thing. The Danger platform that powers the sidekicks is being shut down. He was upset, and so am I. They’re not the coolest phones, or the best, but I loved my sidekick(s, I’ve had three). We understood each other. And now, after six years, I have no choice but to let go.

Which is annoying really, since I’m going overseas in six months and I don’t really want to be saddled with a new bloody mobile phone plan, but what can I do? I also most definitely don’t want to be saddled with a touchscreen, but again, what can I do? They goddamn things are everywhere. Also, the hiptop plan was stupidly cheap. I had unlimited text and web usage, all for $30 a month. Nothing can match that. Now there’s just another new expense for me to deal with. Le sigh.

The first person to suggest I get an iPhone will receive a fork in the eye.

Fightin' in a basement offers a lot of difficulties

This morning I woke to the apocalypse. At first I thought the red glow tinging the upstairs landing was a fever induced hallucination, but as I stumbled back to bed after consuming about half a gallon of water, I stopped to have a peek outside and realise that no, definitely the apocalypse.

Photobucket

As it turns out, Sydney was graced with the worst dust storm in the city's history. The worst comparable event of this kind happened in Melbourne in '83. The news just said kilotonnes of topsoil has been dumped over the city. Everything is covered in dust, it looks like the cars have just returned from a drive in the Outback. It was so bad this morning that you could taste the dust in the air, I didn't even venture outside but it was enough to permeate into the living room.

Photobucket

This tops a day of insane weather, which started with 32 degree morning, epic thunderstorm in the evening, heavy winds, and finally, red dawn. It's very impressive, if completely chaos inducing. There were health warnings issued for respiratory concerns. Public transport, traffic, and such has obviously come to a stand-still. Flights were diverted and grounded as well, I can't even imagine how those planes must look. Actually, there's money to be made here in offering a local car wash *ponders* I regret not taking my own pictures but I was simply too spaced out to even think about it, I feel a thousand times worse than yesterday and so I've spent the day drugged and comatose in turns. It's not much fun.

Photobucket
Here be more pics, news coverage here.

Yesterday was such a gorgeous morning so it was lovely to meet Mandy in a cafe in the park and discuss my uni work. Makes a nice change from being inside a stuffy office at uni, that's for sure. She brought her dog along and it was soooo cute. So yes, that was a lovely little outing. She gave me some good advice as well. I suppose you have to keep working if you want to improve. I had some time before meeting Em and Roze, so I thought I'd pop into a Telstra shop to see if they could fix Jasper. This turned out to be a bit of a mistake. The first shop gave me a heart attack by informing me they no longer stocked those phones and no longer offered my plan (even though the internet still offers it? Um, FAIL Telstra.) I refused to accept this and wandered down to the bigger store, where a query into repairing Jasper led to the purchase of an entirely new phone *headdesk* Turns out they are discontinuing the plan and no longer stock the hiptops, but they had one left, so I had to take it while I still had the chance. So, may I introduce my wholly unintentional, if so far quite pleasing, upgrade:

Photobucket

I debated over the name for quite some time but finally settled on Donna...cause she's red, see? She's got a few extra trimmings to Jasper, and is also thinner and lighter. She also doesn't have the weird side panels that will snap off. So yes, she has to last me a very long time, so I better look after her.

Following this unexpected drama, I was late to the movies, so I missed the start to Inglourious Basterds but I doubt I missed anything important. I think Em and I are a bit too squeamish to watch Tarantino movies in public. It's ok to squeal and hide under blankets on Roze's couch, but fellow cinema goers don't really appreciate it as much. It's very intense and quite long, but a good movie overall. Some great one-liners. I do think it lacks moral attitude, but it is Tarantino, so I suppose that's irrelevant. Also, Eli Roth looks fantastic in a tux. Following dinner, we all went our separate ways just in time to be caught in the rain. I got completely soaked walking to my car and was tempted to sit in the rain and cry. That's the kind of flu I have at the moment, the kind that just makes you want to cry.

I best go find something to eat. Followed by yet more drugs. And possibly more sleep. So much time being wasted! Sigh.

Weathervanes my one and lonely

You know, I would love to get a Blackberry for my next phone, but I really don't seem to have any other choice but to persevere with the Sidekicks. I get a $30 plan from Telstra that inludes unlimited web browsing, email, msn/yahoo messenger, sms and mms. So pretty much I just pay for my calls and since the only person I really ever ring is my mum, who is my nominated Telstra number and thus the first three minutes are free, I virtually pay nothing extra above phone repayment. This is the only really decent "internet" plan available in this country. Most of the others want to charge me $2.05 per MB. Per megabyte. Now I just had a look at my last bill and I rack up about 60GB on Jasper in a billing period. That's my problem with cap plans as well, my internet and sms use is just too high to justify something like that. I am an extremely unbalanced user. I mean, I could probably tone it down, but I don't really want to. I like Jasper being connected all the time. And sure the Sidekick3 leaves a lot to be desired - the lack of applications being the most grating at the moment - but it's served me well these past few years...ignoring the part where it fell apart and became Terminator phone. Not strictly Jasper's fault. I'm just annoyed that they're no longer Sharp handsets, but Motorola. Motorola and I do not have a good working relationship. It's also a slide screen and no longer the flip one I'm so fond of. But c'est la vie, what can one do.

On that French note, I'm considering starting a French class next month. It goes for 6 weeks and is quite affordable in the greater scheme of things. It also sounds like a lot of fun. Thing is, I don't know if I can really justify extra-caricular activities during Thesis Time. Bah.

Speaking of, bunch of internships I need to apply for, including a production assistant that includes a two week stint in Japan. It may be unpaid, but duuuudes, travel! That would be very cool. Doubt I'd get it, but no harm in applying.

For the first time ever I have actually reached my Wii Fit goal, and two weeks before the date I'd set myself. This prompted the Wii Fit to ask after my health, stating it was worried my quick progress is hazardous. It's so cute! Haha. I'm actually very impressed with myself. Yet again goes to prove that I am a mad woman when I put my mind to something. Onwards!

Tomorrow I must meet my supervisor somewhere in Kings Cross which I fail at navigating, so I should probably look that up. It will be followed by movies with the girls - Inglourious Basterds, finally.

I'm not going to lie, today was a very trying exhausting passage of time, greater majority of which I struggled to remain on my chair and felt quite ill. But, I still made a list of things I love, so:
I love the humid mornings
I love my friends
I love my parents being independent and the break this gives us all
I love connecting with people over the most random things
I love how Abbi and I can't write anything without name-dropping Spacemonkey in some way
I love the promise of summer

IT LIVES!

Internet! Oh glorious, wonderful internet. I was beginning to think you were just a dream. FINALLY back on-line! Here's a post I wrote last week when I naively thought I was connected only to be proven wrong at the last minute. More recent nonsense to follow after I indulge in some Good News Week. There shall be blogging, glomping of individuals on msn, reading and replying to 87 emails, and getting through the 312 items in my Reader. Oh internet induced sleep deprivation, I've missed you!

***

This is the first time my laptop’s been on in 7 days. It made weird dinging noises when I tried to start it up the first two times, nearly gave me a heart attack. It would be terribly fitting for my laptop to really give up the ghost this time. God knows it’s the way things have been going lately. Current war victims:
- Jack
- Jasper

But I will get to that later. Oh by the way, EPIC BLOG OF DOOM WARNING. You’ve been informed.

First, and randomly, last week’s Time Magazine has a feature on Johannesburg and the World Cup. It has the following delightful paragraph:
Few cities in the world can match Joburg’s terrifying reputation for crime and fear –and it has been that way since it was founded.
Doesn’t that just fill one with pride for one’s hometown? As the old joke goes, I’m not scared, I’m from Kempton. To be honest, I’m glad I grew up there. I think it taught me a lot. But honey, that ain’t no way to live.

Oh, the article goes on to talk about how reuniting the city will resolve its problems and all the initiatives in place for the World Cup next year (which I thoroughly look forward to cause I think the criminals are going to have a field day). It appears the backbone of the plan is to plant trees, because apparently, “wherever you make a place greener, you don’t have so many problems….green spaces give people hope. No grime, no crime.” Maybe I’m just cynical but I find a gaping hole in this logic…mostly in the sense that huge amounts of crime go down in places like Central Park (have you watched Law & Order? Honestly, how many bodies have they pulled out of there?) But I digress. No wait, not quite. People do realise there is more than one township in South Africa right? I mean, I don’t see why Soweto always has to hog the limelight. You can do tours of Soweto, so you know, as far as townships go, they’re not too bad off, at least they have a tourism industry. Timbiza, just down the street from my childhood home, does not have that luxury. Am I being flip? I don’t mean to be. It’s hard for me to treat any of this stuff with perhaps the gravity it requires. I spent 14 years there listening to other people do that and it’s kind of made me apathetic to the whole thing. I just take some gleeful sort of pride in coming from a place with a “terrifying reputation for crime and fear.” Clearly, I’m just an idiot like that.

Speaking of Law & Order, UK versions on tonight. I missed it last week and was so not impressed. It is followed by Numb3rs which makes Wednesdays Jen-takes-over-the-TV night. I’m unduly fond of both shows.

Anywho, where to begin? At the beginning I suppose. I’m answering my own rhetorical questions. That’s a bad sign. (Do I know what rhetorical means!) The chaos and destruction of the moving that commenced last Wednesday, culminated in epic amounts of bruises and aching limbs by Friday. Three people are not meant to move an entire house worth of stuff by themselves. Especially when two of them already have a variety of aches and pains (all motorcycle induced, come to think of it) which leaves one to run from one to the other and pick up the slack. Also, this is a terrace house. I’ve climbed more stairs in the last week than I possibly ever have in my life. Even when I climbed to the top of the Voortrekker monument…oh wait, did I do that? I can’t remember. I was there though. We had movers in on Thursday to move some of the bigger things. They were actually very lovely boys. I bought them lunch but I kind of regretted that afterwards when I realised they had wrapped the cabinets in a sort of non-stick plastic wrap which they didn’t remove and which is a total bitch to get off. Ah well, what’s done is done.

We weren’t even a day into the move when Jack had a meltdown. Considering his age, I suppose it’s not a totally unexpected thing. He was overheating and so we’ve discovered that either his head gasket has blown or the thermostat has. Either way, I can’t drive him long distances and pretty much have to stop every couple of blocks to top up his water. A call to the Daihatsu garage suggested it would be cheaper just to replace the entire engine rather than just the blown part. Apparently I’m looking at $2000 here *headdesk* I’m driving Martha around now, most of the time. She’s a really lovely little car. I have to say I’m very impressed with the Getz. Considering that it’s one of the cheapest cars on the market, it really delivers and it’s got all the little comforts you could possibly want. Still, I have to take Jack in on Friday, I hope they can fix him and that it’s not as severe as the guy on the phone seemed to think it was.

Friday saw the last few things dragged over and the old house cleaned. I had taken the day off work to get everything sorted. I also forgot I had a hair appointment so had to rush off to that. I also had a gig that evening which I wasn’t going to pass up, regardless of how sore and tired I was. The Academy Is…! How can you resist. Roze decided not to come so I was left to my own devices. Ironically, I managed to offload my spare ticket to a guy begging for one in front of the venue. I used this unexpected cash wisely…by buying a hoodie. Again *headdesk* it was also around this time that I broke Jasper’s already fragile left cover. Repeatedly shoving it into my back pocket twisted the poor piece of plastic until it snapped. I am now contemplating taking it to Telstra to see if they fix sidekicks, or merely utilizing the wonders of superglue. That would be fine until there came a day you actually wanted the cover off *ponders*

Back on point, TAI were brilliant of course. William is really starting to challenge Adam Lazzara in the microphone acrobatics stakes. I envision a black eye for one of the others in the near future. I don’t know what Mike has done to his hair. The shortness combined with the ridiculous faces he pulls while playing reminded me of a geeky older brother playing guitar hero. Adorkable. I always forget Sisky is actually my age, he never looks it. Especially not with the beard thing he has going on. I so wish they weren’t just a support, the set was far too short. They did have a nice balance between old and new though. It always makes me smile to think that this is really a band I’ve watched grow from demo days. Such love. I realised halfway through that this was actually the first time I’ve seen them sans Cobra Starship. I only stayed for about 8 songs of Anberlin’s set. I love them but I think they’re one of those bands that do more for me from the recorded comfort of my iPod. I was just not that interested in their live performance. That’s not saying anything bad about the band, technically they were completely on form. Even though Stephen was having some major issues with his mike. They played ‘A day late’ which is one of the first songs I ever really loved by them, so I left quite content. I ran into an acquaintance outside the venue, she works for a promoter now so she was preparing to hand out some material. I never quite know what to make of her, but she was really lovely that night and we had a nice chat. I love how my social skills only work when they want to. I’ve been really good lately actually. I’ve been feeling a lot more in control of myself.

Since then it’s just been the madness of trying to unpack things and get them in their right places. There was the obligatory trip to IKEA, since apparently no matter how much my father complains that we have too much stuff, it doesn’t stop him from encouraging the acquisition of more. I did need a chest of drawers though, so I’m not complaining. At least I have somewhere to put my t-shirts now without the threat of them toppling over and killing me every time I open the closet. I’m also not lacking on the space for one. My new room is huge. It’s like a proper room, the one I’ve been whinging for these past 8 years. I also love the kitchen, it’s just such a nice set-up. To be honest, I just love the house. It’s the kind of modern terrace they always advertise around the city. I’ve always liked this sort of thing. It’s full of feature walls I wholeheartedly approve of. My room has one in an off-colour red, so it fits perfectly with my stuff. The study is that institutional prison blue I cannot stand. I however share it with my mum so all our bookcases hide it almost completely from view. My OCD is none too keen on this shared study business since all my furniture is dark wood and all hers is birch. It’s not matching! But no, suppress, suppress. Sacrifices are a natural part of life *zen moment*

I’ll post up pics of everything, such as the fire-hazard view from my bedroom window, just as soon as I find the connection cable for my camera. There’s always something missing.

It felt like an epically long week so when Monday rolled around I was almost glad to go back to work. It didn’t last long since we were so incredibly busy and I had to do end of month. [Side note – how can it be bloody September already? Where has the year gone? My thesis is due in three months! AAAAGH and so on.] I had an awful day yesterday, one thing after another. I was running late for my train and of course that would be the day I couldn’t find parking at the station. Eventually I gave up and parked illegally. I still managed to make good time, so I was only 5 minutes late to my meeting with Mandy. I had been holding out for this for weeks now. I just wanted someone to rip into my creative piece and tear it to pieces. She didn’t do that. She did edit the entire thing professionally and gave me some really useful suggestions that I think I will definitely take on board. I aim to re-write the entire thing and have all the external media done by next week. We get along so well, cause she’s just so laid-back and I feel like I can say anything and there isn’t an expectation of me to do the academic poseur thing. She actually said to me the piece could work fine academically but she wanted to treat me like a professional writer, not a student. It was a really good meeting, I felt like I actually wanted to go out and work on it again afterwards.

So yes, that’s what I’ve been doing with myself. A whole lot of bruise-inducing chaos. I loathe all these boxes still standing around. I may be developing a box-unpacking mania. I was going to mention some current affairs things that have piqued my interest, like that ludicrous school death, and sheer randomness of TV shows such as Talking about your generation which last night asked its contestants to dress up as important figures of their generation and so Gen Y dressed as Harry Potter and Gerard Way, but I’ve sort of run out of steam. Shall go make room in my closet for my shoes instead.

P.S. I realise I never posted that playlist I said I would. The modem was unceremoniously disconnected before I even got a chance to think about it. So it shall go up sometime in the near future.

Not dead

Just almost. As soon as I find the box with the modem/router in it, I shall make my triumphant aka whinging return to the interwebs. At the moment I have to finish this before tomorrow. Too tired and sore to move and not looking forward to a trip to uni. Life and how not to live it.

Plan of action

I have decided I need structure. So, after work I will:
- Check we have what I need to make pancakes
- Purchase said ingredients if necessary
- Purchase more flu meds
- Take Oreo for a walk
- Give Oreo a bath
- Write final 1,500 words of narrative
- Make pancakes
- Write non-linear posts equating 5000 words for inbetween narrative.
- Berate self for crappy writing
- Send piece to friends
- Sleep

Sleep is only viable when all of this is done. Friday after work I will then check responses and email it to my supervisor. I will then start writing up key points for my exegesis. The evening will be dedicated to gaping at Tyson Ritter. After work on Saturday, there shall be more general research. Sunday, if we aren't moving, I shall head to the state library for some serious research. I'm seriously contemplating taking next week off work, just to catch up on some of this stuff as well as the whole moving debacle. Ugh.

I've really reached the point where I'm extremely tightly wound and ready to go off the rails. Must do work. Must be productive. Must not flunk out of Honours and waste year of life.

Deep breaths.

Edit 2.07: Oreo's been walked and washed. The sun's out so I no longer feel like pancakes, instead making Penne al Pollo with a tomato and garlic sauce and lots of mozzarella. Now, to the writing!

Social networking has deserted me

LJ is still not working for me. All these jokes about work productivity soaring over the last 24hrs are not that funny when I'm bored out of my mind.

Now Twitter's doing the same thing. I thought they fixed that! Internet fail. Seriously, technology is evil. You become so entrenched in it without even realising, and then it stops working and you stand around gaping ineffectually. Sigh. At least I brought a book today but it's significantly harder to covertly read under the desk than it is to just have Jasper around.

Mutters regarding the madness be here, here, and here.

So pissed at the BBC right now. Probably unfair seeing as its not their fault [if they dispatched it when they said they did], but still. I mean The Book Depository delivers within a week! It's been 10 days and still no sign of the dvds. Completely ruining my plans for the day. Grumble.

I can't sleep, so I'm rambling.

You know I started crying the minute he collapsed. It was all just so fucking pointless that it hurt so much more, I mean we all knew it would happen eventually, but my brain kept saying "no, not like this, not like this!" My mum put her arm around me and I just lost it, I sobbed like a child. I cried so hard in fact that I barely heard anything after Jack's 'Don't'

I just...I've never reacted like this before. I got teary eyed when Boromir died, when Frodo sailed off to Valinor. When Haldir fell at the battle of Helms Deep - cause I so didn't expect that and the elves arriving have always given me goosebumps. When Sirius, Dumbledore, and Fred died. Dobby! I was upset about Snape too...but all of these, they seemed to serve a purpose. What did Ianto's death achieve? Where was the point in that, the worst plan possibly ever? I cried into my mum's shoulder right until the end, and a good 5 minutes after (I gripped her arm so tight, I think I left marks). Then I sat up and checked in with my friends, tears still streaming down my face.

Never in my life have I felt like *this* over a fictional character. And yes I KNOW it's fiction, and I know I'm being completely irrational and mad to react this way. But these characters are important to me. They become part of our lives. We become invested in them. Fiction is my
*life*. It's been there for me through all the bad times, and it'll be a part of me forever. And yes ok, it's not real, but I FEEL it. I'm invested, I love them like they are. That's what good writing's all about. To make you care. Ianto became my favourite character so suddenly and quietly, it took me by surprise at first. But I could relate to him. And he had such depth. He was witty and amazing and yes, I loved him. As honestly and deeply as you can love a fictional character. Everyone who knows me knows that. Just look at this blog layout! Now he's gone. It's a seperation that feels just as real as any real loss. Last time I was this upset was when my dog died (actually I think I'm kinda more upset now, cause I'd already said goodbye to my dog and he was very old). This was so...futile. And Jack! They were my OTP. I only admitted that last
week! Now it's gone! I don't think I can go on after this. I love Jack, I honestly do, he's been one of my favourite fictional creations since I first laid eyes on him. But I can't deal with this. I can't.

At least after The Deathly Hallows, after everyone was dead (and I was way too shellshocked after such a huge body count to get into the state I'm in now, but I was still upset I assure you!), that was the end. We had to let go. The story was done and we felt our losses deeply, but the
war was over and it was time to move forward. So, after all the excitement and glee for this series, I'm left battered and bruised, and kinda hoping they don't do a season 4. I can't replace him, I can't see someone else with Gwen and Jack. I just...I can't. Maybe I'll feel different in time, but I don't think so. Lizzie still mourns Sirius deeply, so I see this as my fate.

So here's to Ianto Jones, everyone's favourite fictional Welsh boyfriend. They made you break my heart, you silly bastard. May you have a happy ending in an alternate universe somewhere. I'll never replace you in this one.

Conclusion, I am *never* getting this involved with another character again. Never! It'll kill me.

Blargh

Down for the count today. Definitely sick. Bah.

Getting my reading done though - on the last of my crack fiction books, only started last night. But bloody fuck it's depressing. Yes in my current state that level of profanity seems entirely necessary and justifable.

Now, someone pass me the Codral...

Edit 8.34pm - These TW books frustrate me to no fucking end. I mean I'm aware that it's inconsequential tie-in material and I really don't expect much from what I deem to be pretty much sanctioned fanfiction, but is it *so* much to ask for a little consistency? I swear the things I put up with to feed this bizarre addiction, it defies common sense. Bah. Next week can't come fast enough.

I got my head checked by a jumbo jet

I have now officially been awake for 25 hours and 51 minutes. That is right, for the first time in my life I have pulled an all-nighter. Not bad for 16 odd years' worth of education. Turns out you can't leave your honours major assignment until the night before and hope to knock it off in three hours. Turns out that, unlike in undergrad, there's actual work to do. Who knew? Ah you live, you learn.

I didn't even feel tired, maybe a little lag around 2ish but after that it was fine. Perfect this morning. I'm a little bit jittery but I'm putting that down to the 2 litres of Lipton Iced Red Tea I consumed during the evening - its a lot like watered down red bull, but without the health risks. Speaking of red bull, I think I better pick some up before class. Hm. I'm not quite sure what I wrote for this assignment, I'm sure I engaged with some theory at least, so that should be at least, AT LEAST damn it, a pass. I'm also a bit fuzzy as to how I got to work this morning, but I was listening to 'In The Shadows' so I was distracted (that's what you want to hear while driving, isn't it?) Also, I'm thinking its not normal to be visualising reading the book while listening to an audiobook...cause that's all my stupid brain's doing - "Oooh words, this is what they look like!" Hmmm thanks brain.

I'm rambly. I've been like this all night. Thank you to darling Abbi who was there for the entire process, save the last hour...oh and an hour during which there was commuting/dinner and I acted a little stalkerish in wondering where she was since I know it doesn't take her that long to
come home *shifty eyes* She also deserves hugs for putting up with my randomly throwing quotes at her, or sending paragraphs with "does this make sense??" preceding it. AND as if it isn't enough, she also came up with a brilliant flash fiction idea which she has emailed to me so I
have something to read at work this morning/to keep me awake. You rawk dude. I hope my descent into madness was at least somewhat amusing.

So anyway, yeah. I'm trying not to sit down for too long. I have the feeling this is going to be a lot like jet lag. To that I say bring it on bitch! I survived London jetlag, I can survive anything.

Easy peasy pumpkin peasy pumpkin pie -

Come on, complete that sentence! I'll give you a cookie. It's laced with happy, stay awake drugs! Hee!

Ok, so I'm possibly a little manic.

I have my bloody discman with me to listen to this audio book to uni and such (my external drive is still unaccessible). My discman! Bah. How retro-annoying. The things I do for my fandom *shakes head*

I need to stop for a) red bull, b) stamps & envelopes for assignments, c) money for train, d) new TW magazine. Then, this weekend, there is drinking (to drown our collective uni sorrows) and possibly a marathon of sorts on the cards. No thinking required. Huzzah.

Hang on, isn't supanova this weekend? Must. Check. Pay attention, self!

P.S. I really hope these assignments are ok *woe face*

Drop a coin for humanity

Woah what a day. I am spent.

After the lack of sleep the past week and the advent of horrific Ianto-killing dreams, I could barely keep my eyes open last night. I passed out just after 10 (which never happens) and dragged myself awake just after 6 as I still had to do my thesis presentation for today's class. This is one of my pet hates. I have never been one to do my assignments the day it's due, cause it's just too much like playing with fire, or arguing with the Mouth of Sauron. That is, provoking doom and destruction. But c'est la vie, I was simply too tired to get it done. But of course, being a procrastinator, I only started the damn thing around 9, after I let the Oven Cleaning Guy in. As a side note, he made quite a bit of noise, but at least we now have a clean oven which I used tonight to make dinner actually, so yay.

Anyway, by the time mum got home to pay said Oven Cleaning Guy around 10, I only had 4 minutes worth of a proposal. By the time Oven Cleaning Guy left, I clocked in at 6 minutes and had given up. I just can't find a way to talk about my project at any great length because it is a creative piece and it would mostly take shape as it's written, while the theory will come from that once it's done. So until it's actually done, I can only be very vague about what I'm trying to do. So off I went with this rather random and too short presentation. I rushed through it at lightning speed as I always do, rocking the chair on two legs (one day I will fall off and kill myself) but once it was done and I was trying to brace myself for the slew of questions that I couldn't answer, they were all very accomodating and said it sounded excellent. Pause. Blink. What? As it turns out the only major criticism they had was that it was still too broad a topic and that I should perhaps narrow it down to one particular field or social networking site. So let's all wave hello to Twitter because as a micro-blogging site it offers me the most room to work with in terms of analysing the representation of identity in text. Since it's fairly limited in what it does, only providing updates, it's open to a reader-response type of analysis and textual framework setting.

I'm just amazed that it went down so well. Huh. Glad I didn't stay up all night worrying about it. I've posted the actual thing earlier, just for reference's sake.

In non-uni related happenings, I used my PayPal account for the first time today [which is kind of sad since I've had it sine '07] and it was such a breeze. I wish more online sites allowed me to pay this way, it greatly negates the need for the dreaded credit card of doom.

I think my desktop just kind of freaked my dad out. Haha. I'm quite fond of it, I made it myself and I've never been able to get that whole smoke effect thing happening until now. Screencap?

As I'm on the subject of images, found these pics on Jasper today. Not quite sure what I was trying to take a photo of, but the first one is kind of cool anyway.

Also, someone remind me to take a photo of a particular room in Bon Marche level 3. I nearly collapsed in a fit of insane giggles when I walked past it with the others girls yesterday. They wouldn't get it so I immediately had to text Lizzie or combust with glee. I'm a loser like that.

Oh yesterday, what weirdness. We spent almost an hour sitting outside Martin's office before finally getting someone to ring him, only to find out he's in hospital. One of the girls then had the idea that we should workshop our stuff anyway, so off we went to a cafe and spent two hours going over our creative pieces. We were sitting there, with a laptop open, looking at art books and reading poetry out loud. I kid you not. It's probably the most collegial I have ever felt in my entire life. I mean who actually does that? 'You sit in circles with your friends, pontificating to each other' comes to mind.

Now only two more things to do. Creative piece is virtually done even if no one understood what I'm trying to do (surely a sign I'm being post-modern...no?) and just an essay on how the everyday is perceived and changed in terms of how experience is represented in text.

As for the gigs I mentioned this morning, I'm thinking of trying to do both Friendly Fires and Manchester Orchestra. I'm just nervous that I will mistime it and end up missing the second one. See, Friendly Fires is at the Manning Bar at Sydney Uni, door time set at 6. With that timeframe, one would expect them to be on stage around 8.30, done by 11 at the latest. Manchester Orchestra has a door time of 8, and it's at the Oxford Art Factory. Last time I was at that venue with Em, the headliner wasn't even on by 11.30. So, if they stick to my expectations, it would give me half an hour at the very least to get from the Manning to Oxford street. Completely do-able but maybe a bit risky, it would suck majorly to just arrive too late. I don't know. Will think about it. Not for too long though...don't want to miss out completely!

I'm off to bed. I'm freezing out here, and I have a pounding headache. Besides, I just feel like watching 'Cyberwoman'. I'm working tomorrow - the other girl is having some surgery so I'm picking up a few extra shifts. What's annoying is that I'm not getting paid any extra cause it's sort of negated by the long weekend. Sigh. At least I have time to finish my assignments. That's something.

P.S. Just realised I've hit 500 updates on Twitter. It's also my most visited site according to google toolbar. When did this happen? Why did this happen? I weep for my future.

Put your faith in a miracle

The problem with only sleeping three or four hours a night is you tend not to settle into a really deep sleep and so sometimes you have really retarded dreams. Last night I had an especially horrifying one in which Our Fictional Welsh Boyfriend kicked the proverbial bucket and all hell
broke loose. It was intense and depressing. Jack finally washes his hands of the human race, stepping into the TARDIS even as Gwen stands there pleading. You can't just leave, we need you. Are you just going to let us all die? The response being a broken you're going to die anyway, I'd rather not be around to see it. Off he goes, having saved the world for the last time. When I woke up this morning I felt as if the world had actually ended. Woe. Clearly my subconcious has a one track mind. Why can't you do uni work in that time, you useless thing? Bah. Proof that every part of me is actually unproductive.

On the other hand, a human being will inhale a disturbing huge amount of bugs in their sleep during their lifetime. So disturbing an amount that I've forgotten what it is. That completely grosses me out. Considering the merits of sleeping with a mask on...

Don't let me get me

This is getting to a completely embarrasing point. I've never been such a horrific fangirl about anything in my life (except possibly the first time Panic toured...and TAI toured...oh and the first time I got Green Day tickets). I seriously just had to stop myself from combusting in the surgery. Instead I emitted a strangled choking noise which nearly caused me to hyperventilate. The patients all looked at me as if I'm insane. Which, all things considered, is a valid concern. One half of my brain is observing this with complete disgust and thinking "you fucking loser" and yet, I can't help myself. The phrase 'my fandom wants me dead' never seemed more apt.

If you want my love you've got it

I'm so lazily content at the moment I might never move again. I've had such a great weekend and am in such a good mood that even the impending threat of due assignments can't touch me. Why can't I always feel like this? My room gets the best afternoon sun too, so it really doesn't make moving a priority. Friday I was lying here, listening to the new Green Day album, and Oreo was napping with me, randomly barking at the curtain when the wind blew. She's such a loon, it was adorable.

Last night I hung out with Roze and it just lovely. It feels like I haven't seen her in months but its only been a few weeks, time's just been totally messed up lately. Anyway, we saw Wolverine, which is quite enjoyable. Gambit is made of win, obviously. And Hugh Jackman, I mean come on, can't go wrong can you? I think it would have been better though if I hadn't seen Star Trek first. It really just is that good. As far as hyped movies for the year go, it totally blew the others out of the water. [Um the watchmen anyone? Pfft.] Wolverine was way better than
the last X-Men movie at any rate.

We had dinner and just caught up on everything, confirmed our plans for Roze's 80s Movie night this Saturday. I'm making Sangria! And possibly Irish Coffee if I acquire some Jameson. I've discovered this cocktail book I bought ages ago with my shaker. That's the one good thing about moving, you discover things you forgot you had.

I didn't sleep well last night, and by that I mean barely slept at all, so I think I'm entitled to be lazy and spaced out in my room, right? Right. No one bothers me back here, it's lovely.

Tomorrow - work. Blah.

Set phasers to stun

I have had the best night out tonight. Em and I got our times mixed up and ended up seeing Star Trek. It is FANTASTIC. It's funny without being stupid, and just totally gleetastic. It is everything you'd want from a movie. Left feeling totally hyper. We headed over to the gig afterwards, had a couple of drinks and such. Em is such a darling for being convinced to hang out with me all night.

I felt like a million dollar tbh. The sweater dress/tights/heels combo is a winner. It makes such a huge difference if you just feel good ya know. Lots of random touching happening, big smiles. Life's good *happy sigh*

Doesn't sit or stay

My graduation day is turning out much like every other major day in the last 10 years of my life. Do own make up, do own hair, strap self into dress with extreme flexibility, end up sitting in Starbucks alone drinking coffee. People always seem perplexed that I am able to be so solitary, but do you see, it is just my life.

I want to break a large plate.

I had to come into the city at 1 to meet with my supervisor. I wanted to reschedule but my mother got all goddamn pedantic about it, so I came. And its so fucking pointless cause I have nothing to say, cause I haven't done any fucking work. Jesus christ I am so damned screwed.

Woah, I sound angry. I wasn't this angry this morning. Then again, I did get up at 6.30, so maybe I was just still asleep. The timing on this house is so completely off, its at the busiest time of the semester, and definitely in one of my downswings. I just want to curl up somewhere and never emerge.

I've been painting most of the time. Painted a ceiling today and have resolved to never, ever do that again. I was completely covered, in fine white dots. I also put the first coat of cream in my room and study, as well doing the two green feature walls in the study. Mum and I have also done the first coat of the dining room, the foyer is completely done. I'm in love with the green for the study though. I wante something really bright that would actually encourage me to be there, and it's perdect. It's called Saxon Green! I had a *glee* moment in Bunnings when I saw it last night. Just imagine - Saxon Green: For all your Master envy needs. I'm tempted to put a framed photo up in a dictator-ish fashion, just to be silly. Tomorrow morning, I'll head out early again and start the red feature wall for my room and second coat of the rest. I should be able to go back after uni and do the second coat then, so I'll be set to start moving in Friday.

I've still got to finish cleaning the kitchen though, I only did half of the cabinents. So grossed out. I think the house has stood empty for a while, it has that smell. I loathe that smell. Luckily the bleach and paint is getting rid of it.

At some point I'll have to get paint for my bathroom too, but I figured I could do that once I've moved in.

Whoever had what will be our spare room was definitely a rock boy. There is a coheed & cambria sticker on the door. Also, the garage has been soundproofed (and painted blue *sigh*). In other words, band practice occurred there. I've been unceremoniously booted from the garage since my dad seems to think he needs it for "work space".

Can you believe these rooms are even smaller than the one I'm in now? I mean come on, who designs these places? Ah well. At least I get a study. And more closet room.

I definitely need to go to IKEA. Groan. I need an extention for my study desk, a new desk chair, a full length mirror (yes Abs, happy now?), possibly an arm chair and/or entire new bedroom set. Ok the last one is getting out of hand, but I think I'm due for a new bed at some point this year.

All that (and my sore muscles and sleep deprived self) aside, I'm currently sitting in Starbucks, painting my nails. As predicted, my meeting with Mandy only took about twenty minutes. She must think I'm such an idiot. I really need to sort out something to send her. Ugh. Seriously kill me. Sigh. I now have to kill time until 4 when I have to report at the graduation desk. I figured I could leave here at 3, and camp out in a uni bathroom to touch up my makeup and such. I'm hoping I'm not too casual. God this sucks.

Jasper appears to have white paint on him. Brilliant. Well it might be this supposed cream paint my parents keep going on about...I keep refering to the white paint and they keep saying we don't have any white. I think they're purposely being difficult.

Roze is coming to watch me graduate. She's such a sweetheart. Em couldn't come since I only have 3 tickets. If my parents miss it, I will kill them.

Watch the headlines.

As a parting thought, why do I have this compulsion to always say 'Good, thanks' when people ask how I'm doing?
