While I’m waiting for my new phone to arrive, I’m using one of my ye olde phones – a flip phone from what must be about 7 years ago. I’ve had the hiptops so long that it feels practically prehistoric. The last time I used it was in 09, when I took it to Europe with me in order to avoid ginormous roaming charges (it worked.) It didn’t feel quite so outdated then, but now…well.
It’s a bit of a time warp – a unique insight into the past, if you will. The phone’s display screen on the front has a pic of William Beckett, the background is Billie Joe and the ringtone is ‘There’s a good reason these tables are numbered.’ The hilarious thing however is that it’s filled with old text messages from first year of uni. Mostly about bands and band boys. And lots of subterfuge messages from M about transferring out of her course. And lots of picture messages of really random things, including one of Pete Wentz with the subject line ‘Bringing Sexy Back’. Hahahaha. Ah dear. My friends are awesome.
There are some stellar examples of eloquence, I just have to share some of it.
Run rabbit run rabbit run run run. Don’t give the farmer his fun fun fun…BLAHAHA!
I agree. The braaaaaaiiins made us do it.
But we DO all know that frogs go la di da di da la di da di da la di da di da! They don’t go gloomp gloomp gloomp!
This whole trip was as useless as that yellow lemon shaped rock over there. Wait a minute, there’s a lemon behind that rock!
Ryan, what the FUCK are we going to do about these mimes!?
O Wise One, where would I be without your infinite wisdom?
Lord Vader... Rise...
We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy!
Beware of women with prams!
I’m sending my Brian as extra protection.

We clearly mostly conversed in quotes and/or obscure references. We also liked exclamation marks. So really, not much has changed. Although I have realised I don’t text nearly as much as I did back then – I guess it’s been supplanted with email and twitter. Ah technology, always morphing into something else.
But enough of the blast from the past, time to get to work. Two deadlines coming up - gah. It’s enough to make one weep.

Growing by the hour
I’m finally a little bit excited for Miracle Day. Despite my better judgement, I assure you. But ee! Two days! It’s the countdown UKTV has going that did it, I think. Every time I flipped over it was just there – staring at me.
Oh, wait. I just realised it’s on at the same time as the Super Rugby final! Conundrum! Uuuugh. Jack will just have to wait. I must watch my boys play, it’s going to be such an epic game. I had grand plans of going but I’d have to stay overnight cause flight restrictions mean there’s no flight back to Sydney after 8.30, and also the tickets sold out quite quickly. They were so, so cheap too. But never mind, I don’t exactly have money to waste like that anyway, even if it’s the last opportunity to see them play this year (the All Blacks tri-nations match is also in Brisbane, le sigh.)
What has transpired since my last foray into the blogosphere? Amazon bought The Book Depository – horror! How long until we lose our free shipping? Also, I don’t want to support Amazon. But, but, but…cheap books! *weeps* One of my twitter friends recommended Better World Books so I might give them a go one day when I have disposable income again. On the topic of changes, apparently Google will be rebranding Blogger in the not too distant future. Meh. This whole Google+ thing is getting on my nerves. Really, how many social networking things do we need? I'm becoming a luddite in my old age.
I finished my beginners French course. Je suis un champion! Haha, I’m an idiot. Anyway, it was so much fun, I really enjoyed it. I’d continue but it’s just not possible to wrangle that right now – so I’ll just have to study by myself. I desperately want to learn other languages as well. German first, I think. Mostly because I think it’d be easier than French, I do kind of already have a Germanic framework. Also, Dutch. And then I’ll go back to the Latin based languages. Spanish. Italian. It’d be easier if I could just get a chip installed in my brain. Or if I had someone to actually speak to.
That reminds me. Hilarious moment of ineptitude. We were sitting in class, chatting in pairs, and my partner went over into English to ask me something. I started replying but alas, in Afrikaans. My brain just skidded to a halt and went ‘uh, wait, wrong one!’ That hasn’t happened to me in years.
I’ll probably never be able to flip through other languages the way I do with English and Afrikaans, but if I could just get a decent level of competency up where I don’t need a reference, and where I can actually read properly, I’ll be happy.
There was something else I was going to say but it has clean popped out of my head. Work still sucks. I have extreme difficulty waking up in the mornings. And I have gone off food. That’s about it. Further updates as events warrant.

Frustration
You know what’s hilarious? My mum always tells me off for downloading music, saying that I will get a virus, and yet in all the years I’ve downloaded music, I never once got a virus from that – I trust the people supplying said music after all. Yet when I do fucking software updates, the things come waltzing in like alcoholics to an open bar. I had a particularly lovely spyware come in with Java this morning (useless Java, why is it on here anyway?? Dammit!) and it took aaaaages to clean it up. I’m not convinced it’s all gone either. I might have to do some registry changes if all else fails – I hate doing those. But yes, the irony. This isn’t the first time it’s happened either. Windows update wrecked my last laptop – granted that wasn’t a virus but it just would not work properly after I ran the update. Rawr.
While waiting for my antivirus (and where the hell was this when I needed it anyway? Real time protection my ass) to run a full scan I watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Interesting film, made me wonder about the nature of art. Like if someone inspires you and directs you saying take a photo of this or try painting like that, does that make it less your art because it’s their genius? You become a conductor for their idea almost. Sure, you’re still the one doing the work, but would the work have any power without that insight and following on that, is your work really still yours?
I don’t know. I know I’m not going to settle until I find what I’m looking for. Something…else. I want something different, something more…some sort of counterintuitive love.

Lie awake but dreaming
I love waking up to packages in the morning. One I was expecting because Agent99 told me she had sent it from Cardiff before she left, the other arrived waaaay quicker than I had anticipated. The latter is a custom skin I had made for my laptop, cause I am a loser like that. They were supposed to send an email when it went to print which I never got and it's from San Diego, thus the surprise at its early arrival. Anyway, here is poor Sheldon now that he's been geeked out (like pimping except with much greater social stigma)...

Things like this is the reason I'm constantly broke. Honestly, there is no hope for me.
Sticking to the fandom side of things (ha, like that's something new), Roze sent me a signed poster (one of fifty apparently) wrapped in so much bubblewrap it fills the heart with joy. Bubblewrap! Back on point, the reason I feel this is blog-worthy is simply because Roze has been trying to get me a signed fandom something or other since about Year 10. I don't know if she remembers this, but I do. Always with schemes and plans and plotting, and all because I'm an obsessive nutter. Now she has finally succeeded! You are a fandom enabler, Ms Roze, I salute your efforts and thank you for not only putting up with me, but encouraging me. The madness of it!
But anyway yes, packages are a lovely start to any day :)
Meanwhile, Great Expectations is trying to kill me. I've been reading it for what feels like years of my life (it's only been about two weeks, and I have had to intersperse it with other things) and I'm only 200 pages in. That's not even halfway! I don't know why I'm doing this to myself. Don't get me wrong, I mean it's well written and there are some clever turns of phrase and what have you, but I find it so dull and hard to engage with, it's work to get through it. I hate it when reading feels like work, I'm a page-turner reader, I breeze through a book when it catches my imagination, I have to be transported and not want to put it down. That is why I've never been a fan of canon literature, I find 99% of it to be so terribly hard to become immersed in, and so unrelatable, that I find it painful to read. I read enough dull things for university because of necessity, I don't want to do the same in my free time. But still, I'll struggle through this all the same. I was going to try Jane Eyre again after this, but at this rate I doubt I'll have the will.

I just don't know what to do with myself
You know you have really strayed into full-blown geekdom the day you no longer think it would be weird to buy say a R2-D2 Peppermill, and instead believe everyone will think it is totally cool. I found myself thinking that this surely was the height of kitchen coolness and so, dear readers, I have stumbled well and truly from part-time dabbler into Big Bang Theory nerdom. I'm a comic book addiction away from the point of no return.
...and I love it.
Sigh.
A homo habilis just discovering his opposable thumbs says what?
Meanwhile, I noticed in the paper this morning that Harvey Norman were having a laptop sale, so of course I go have a look. Now honestly, I didn't need to. This laptop, while being unable to run live messenger, having sound card problems, a wonky cd drive, periodic crash dumps, and a screen that blacks out whenever it chooses, is actually still working fine. I cannot justify purchasing a new laptop.
I still did though. I love, love this HP Pavilion I've had the last three years, it's gorgeous and has a 15.4" widescreen and full sized keyboard that has served me well. Now I've gotten a superlightweight HP Pavilion dm3 Notebook, which is only 13.3 inches and it's taking some getting used to. There's not nearly as much space to work with and of course all my desktops are way too big now. That said it's probably going to be better for taking around with me to uni and such. Plus I could only get a 13" or 16" and higher, the laptop bag my friends had made for me only takes up to 15.6" and hell, I haven't even used it yet, I'm not going to get a laptop that doesn't fit.
Anyway yes. Now I have a new laptop. Why don't people stop me from doing this to myself?
I'm doing the set-up as I type this. Oh god I hate change...

Swallowing the ground beneath my feet
"It looks like another installer is preventing Windows from working."
You know what else is going to prevent Windows from working? My shoe through the screen. For the last four days I have been trying to install the new version of Windows Messenger as they for some reason took offence to my old version (which in itself irks me, if I don't want to new version, why not just leave me be? I don't like the bubble-esque appearance of the new one.) As I could not sign in anymore, I had no choice but to click 'yes' on their update now dialogue box, but alas, that's were progress ended. I have received that lovely message ever since. I don't know what to do anymore. I can promise you nothing else is running while I'm downloading. I try to do it when I've just started it up and nothing else is open. I turned off my virus-protection thinking that may be blocking it and lowered the firewall...nothing. I deleted the old version and tried to start from scratch...nothing. GAH.
Meanwhile, I had such big plans for NaNoWriMo last night and then around 5, mum came home early with her work friend in tow. The friend and I decided this was excellent cause for wine drinking and Big Bang Theory watching (kites ho!). Then when we dropped her off, we continued the wine-drinking there. I'm not going to lie, I don't handle my wine very well. I can drink cocktails all night, but after three glasses of wine, I'm a giggly fool. Suffice it to say, the writing plans were sort of out of the window after that.
I'm going to try and make some progress today. As well as exercise, I've been slacking. I can't even blame my thesis anymore since that all officially finished yesterday. Shock and awe. This afternoon, I'm taking Gwen, Tosh, Owen, Jack and Ianto over to Em's place. Fandom ahoy.
