Do you like to hurt?

Here follows Jen's random post of no point or purpose other than amusing herself. It all started with a quote from Firefly:

Mal: Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir!
Mal: Ain't we just?

As I was googling that scene, the lovely Trope Wiki put in an appearance. I LOVE THIS WEBSITE! God, it’s just so nerdy and hilarious and, oh did I mention, nerdy!

Abandoned By The Cavalry is a subtype where the Big Damn Heroes should have been there in the first place and are only redeeming themselves now. When the Big Damn Heroes come in with a massive gunship or other vehicle with intimidating firepower (see BFG), it is a Big Damn Gunship. In the event that the Big Damn Heroes just show up in some relatively dramatic manner and clear a path for the hero to get to whatever they need to go, usually during an air battle, it's the I Got You Covered subtype. Commonly awesome.

*snort*

Oh, oh, if you follow the link to the BFG [Big Fucking Gun haha] and then have a look at the Doctor Who example:
According to DW writings, the Special Weapons Daleks are said to be even nuttier and more homicidal than your garden variety Dalek due to exposure to the BFG's radiation output. Which makes them rolling (and possibly levitating) Daleks of Mass Destruction.

Daleks of Mass Destruction! Hahaha.

And in the same section - Jack Harkness, of both Doctor Who and Torchwood has always been fond of them. His weapon of choice is a modified defabricator that is the size of a minigun. Come on, he only uses that once! [John Hart also appears to have one…that Time Agency was clearly a bit weird.] Jack does however seem quite fond of the truly big fucking gun they somehow aquire by season 2, which is also the one he uses in ‘The Stolen Earth’.

Then there's something called the woobie…hm, true enough about Lex, I never watched a lot of Smallville but I’ve seen enough to see what they’re getting at. Oh and look, both Ten, Donna and Ianto get mentioned! Oh and the Ood - The Ood are more or less a race of alien woobies.

Ok, ok I'll stop. I can't help wondering if my screenwriting tutor is aware of this site? And yes I am a nerd. That is why this website amuses me as much as it does. It's a never ending supply of glee!

Speaking of glee, Merlin is totally gleetastic *nods fervently*

I have been disturbingly happy as of late. I’m all glee this and glee that. It’s bizarre. And not very eloquent. Hm.

Anyway, should probably make some vague attempt to do something at least. Like cleaning out my room. Ugh. But it has to be done damn it, and soon!

Blah

Another pointless blog. It's one of those days.

Firstly, I'm officially enrolled for Honours. I'm going to have to do three classes this semester - all day Tuesdays and Wednesday afternoon. Then just independent thesis production for spring.

Secondly, I have the first six episodes of Merlin. All is well.

Thirdly, it is ridiculous for an album upload to take four hours. Really. I mean come on internet, wtf.

Fourthly, I watched Matt Smith on Doctor Who confidential. There is hope. Oh yes, there is.

Fifthly, Iaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanto *shrugs*

Sixthly....ok, I came across this girl I was quite close to back in SA on Facebook and messaged her. Of course one of the first things she asks me is whether there is "someone special" in my life. Why is this always seemingly the most pertinent question? And when I say no, it's like, oh you poor thing. I don't feel sorry for myself. If I wanted to, I could've been in a relationship by now. I just haven't wanted to. It's like talking to Adam the other night and he's telling me about everyone, and they always have girl/boyfriends, always. They break up with one and two seconds later, there's another. Can't people ever just be alone? Is it that terrible? I mean, I don't want to drag some poor sucker that shows interest into a pointless relationship where I'm with him for the sake of being with him while not actually feeling anything, just cause I don't want to be alone. HOW is that fair? I've subtly extracted myself from all such situations cause I don't want the guy to get hurt when he realises he feels a lot more for me than I do for him. It's needlessly complicated. So, no, there isn't "someone special" in my life because I don't want to jerk someone around just cause they're there. There has only been one person so far I've been willing to take the metaphorical leap for and he turned out to be taken. All the guys I lust after, the boys I dub with weird names and psuedo-stalk if they happen to be around, that doesn't mean anything really, it's just entertaining. I don't know why it's so shocking to not be in a committed relationship. There's nothing wrong with me. I'm just not interested.

But I digress.

I'm thinking of introducing a new feature called the Playlist of the Week, to replace the shortlived Obsession of the Week. I'll take a song and Genius will mix it up for me, and I shall post it here. Why? Because I can. Also because PMA have started doing "Blog Wars" where two genius playlists based on the same song are put up against each other and readers vote for the best one and I loved the idea. I don't care about the voting, I just like to see what different playlists get mixed up. We'll see if I ever get around to it.

Oh yeah, this is quite amusing - James Montgomery wrote up some new year's resolutions musicians should have.

P.S. Matt Smith was in 'In Bruges'? Huh?

P.P.S. Amusing randomness here

P.P.P.S. "Nevertheless, the pteranodon was clearly very annoyed to find a rival in the Hub. It perched on the walkway outside the Hothouse, pecking at the top of the other dinosaur's head and screeching with rage." Hahahahahaha. Only in this fandom. It's mad. I love it.

Girls just wanna have fun

Oh. My. God. I am so bored, it defies eloquent description. Not that we aren't busy, I just don't have anything to do. Of course, what I want to do is lie in bed reading about Invisible!Ianto, not sit at work making small talk about Bingo. Still, could be worse I suppose. I just hate how time virtually goes backwards when you are bored. One tick forward, two ticks back. If I squint at the clock I can practically see it doing that!

I had to drag myself out of the warm convines of my bed, where I was very comfortable for a change, to have breakfast with Em this morning. We sat around for ages before I took her home with me until I had to go to work. It's nice to just relax sometimes and talk about everything and nothing. I gave her some music, she informed me of all the gossip. Life is simple. Turns out Roze did not leave any dvds for me with her, which is in flagrant disregard of our prior agreement. I shouldn't be surprised really.

I would enjoy gathering a group of friends and going to a dimly lit restuarant, to chat about nothing over a glass of wine. I know, I know. I've become a wine drinker. Shocking. But it's nice, and it's social. I want that. I want to be social. I want it to at least be an option. That's my resolution for this year.

Another hour of boredom to go. There is no amount of epic sighs that could do justice to this situation.

Oh I’m so clever until my paranoia kicks in

I won’t be the lonely one
Sitting on my own and sad
A fifty year old
Reminiscing what I had
I won’t be the lonely one
Sitting on my own and sad
Forget your dad, he's gone

And repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

My mum, since she now works in IT with the loveable nutters [I have dubbed Danny and Paul as Mac and PC after those Apple ads], has access to all this stockpile of tv shows on the main work server. She’s already brought home ‘The IT crowd’ and ‘Big Bang Theory’ and so, never one to miss an opportunity, I sent her a list of shows I’m interested in. Apparantly PC took one look at my list and proclaimed “She has to be a Doctor Who fan”. This was the list….

* Merlin
* Life on Mars
* The Tudors
* Rome
* Blackpool
* Black Books
* Weeds
* Firefly
* Nevermind the Buzzcocks (wild stab in the dark)

…I think it’s ‘Blackpool’ that gave it away in the end. I concede most of it is British but I insist that this is because British Television still make vague attempts at having shows with scripts as opposed to the reality TV and celebrity driven crap the US is largely responsible for [of course there are exceptions, I understand things like 'Arrested Development' are well worth your time]. Anyway, they only have the US version of ‘Life on Mars’ which means nothing to me, cause hello, John Simm’s the driving force here, but they do have Merlin. Huzzah. Also, apparantly PC has a lot of the shows at home on DVD so next time I see him, I shall gently persuade him to let me borrow them. Nerd fellowship!

In other news, I’m still sadly enamored of Mac and it still sucks majorly.

I was wondering today how exactly it happened that I fell into this whole sci-fi nerdom. One day I was minding my own business, the next I’m flailing over everything. I blame Star Wars and the void left by Lord of the Rings.

I spent the afternoon shopping with Lizzie. It was goooood. I am slightly disappointed with Myer’s lack of anything appealing, and with general shoe options - it’s all been rather lacking. Just Jeans has by far the best fashion selection this summer, I’ve identified almost $200 worth of gear I’d like to acquire - like this, this, and this, among others. Yeah I know, I'm terrible. Oh and they have those red acid wash Levi’s on clearance! The jeans of destiny! Even though they are as uncomfortable as all hell, I can’t help feeling that I was meant to own those jeans. Pair of Docs and long singlet and they'll be right.

In the end the only thing I bought was Doctor Who season 4 cause it was greatly discounted at JB. The Doctor > Work Shirts. Oh and I got two Torchwood books cause Lizzie is awesome. I can combat some of the withdrawal with dodgy sanctioned fanfiction. I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help myself.

Twinkle little star

Here's a tip : cough syrup + staying out late + wine = bad news for chest infection.

I feel like I have a small child sitting on my chest. Cracked rib imminent.

Ah well. I had a good time. Adam probably thinks I'm possessed with all my convulsions due to the coughing and phlegm, but hey, they only came on the way home. So I don't think I did too badly.

We saw 'The day the earth stood still' which while not being a complete loss, still wasn't brilliant. But I expected as much. I couldn't stop thinking 'Bah, Torchwood would be all over this like a rash' and 'Somebody call UNIT! Where's the Doctor? He'd never stand for this!' I half expected Jack to appear over the sphere with suction cups. I just can't help myself. Manic grinning resulted.

After the movie we moved to the nearest bar. Got the last train home, crawled into bed sometime after midnight, was up again by five thanks to the fucking coughing. Epic. Sigh.

Spent morning indulging Master fetish. Currently on train to meet Lizzie in the city. Am wearing jeans. Its too hot for jeans.

For tomorrow is a bright new day

Driving on auto-pilot. Getting my hair done. Having lunch while watching tv - toast, coffee, and NCIS. Work. Shuffle and repeat.

And so, life falls back into mediocre patterns of normality. But I won't be complacent. I feel different. Subtle, but there. Changes instilled by unavoidable circumstances and changes in scenery. One must capitalise, and take growth when it comes and where it comes.

Love a city with a pulse of its own.

I have now officially accepted my Honours place. Should know the finer details soon, along with exactly how much stressing this year is going to entail. Ah academics, why do I encourage you so? There must be something wrong with me.

I indulged in that deplorable hobby of mine last night where I raid poor unsuspecting artists' Myspaces. On the up side I now have a whole lot of Cage The Elephant, Black Kids, Frightened Rabbit, and The Brute Chorus. It's all good stuff and I could hardly resist. If anyone is to blame it's people who introduced me to these, so point the finger firmly at the United Kingdom. Continuing on this wave length, I am utterly obsessed with Glasvegas. Obsessed. So much so I actually bought the album on iTunes. Hello, revolution. I've never bought an album on iTunes before, I object to not having anything tactile to represent my purchase. But it was cheap, and I wanted it now. So, who am I to argue with the demanding voices in my head? No one (Naboo), that's who.

Anyway, tomorrow it is reportedly going to be a nice and toasty forty degrees. Conclusion - I will definitely not be walking to the station as originally planned...I don't want to subject someone to scraping my melted form off the pavement.

Another girl with her finger on the world

iTunes Genius has compiled one of the greatest indie playlists I think I have ever completely listened through. I am so impressed with it, I actually burnt a copy for Em. I love genius. Further proof I should listen to Abbi more often.

Sigh. I want to curl up somewhere and watch something. I'm not sure what I'm craving, but something. Everything is Illuminated! But I don't have it. Damn. "My grandfather informs me that is not possible..."

UGH. I miss that. Bring me the huuuuman. Dirty pirate dalek. Good times.

Ignore my random rambling.

My life is a cluttered mess. My favourites folder is a metaphor for it. One look at it is enough to give clear indication as to how cluttered my living space is, not to mention the clear evidence of my obsessive hoarding of everything. I really need to go through my room (and documents) and chuck out half the stuff. I really do. I have made these resolutions before though, and once it actually comes to it, I only manage to get rid of maybe one bag’s worth of stuff. This is ridiculous. I can’t go through life like this. I can’t attach sentimental value to everything! Hell, half the time I can’t even remember what the meaning was meant to be. AND it’s not like I ever look at any of the stuff anyway, I never think about it, it just sits around gathering dust. I need to do something about it. I really, honestly do.

I have somehow managed to secure a social engagement with Adam on Tuesday night. Very random since we haven't hung out properly since High School, but it will no doubt be interesting. I have no idea what exactly we'll be doing, but hey, whatever. I suspect a movie and drinking is on the cards.

In other news, my muses seem to have deserted me! Fickle fiends!

P.S: Ahahaha, William Beckett did a Mighty Boosh post! Ah Mr. Beckett, I do love you so.

Still not ginger though

New Doctor, new Doctor, new Doctor, new Doctor.

Photobucket

As this is my first time really having to deal with a "new" Doctor, it's all rather strange. Still, I am glad that they cast a relative unknown actor in the part. Some of those rumours flying around were terrifying (Robert Pattison? James McAvoy? John Simm? Ok I love the last one, but there is no possible way that would ever have been plausible). Not to mention those "he'll be a girl!" rumours, now that was just weird. It helps that with every regeneration, the Doctor changes traits as well, so it's not so much trying to copy and replace David, but making a whole new thing out of it. Whoever came up with this concept showed some great foresight [I'm becoming more and more enamored with the finer details of the Whoniverse, such as scripting and production, they really are just so good, just the most miniscule details that are considered amazes me]. No one could fill David's chucks, but I'm hoping Matt brings some different footwear to the table, perhaps some red Mat Devine-esque Doc Martens? I'm willing to give the guy a shot. Although, I am firmly of the opinion that with Steven Moffat now in charge, regular nervous breakdowns will occur - a creepy as hell emotional rollercoaster! Fun.

All these hour long specials I have to content myself with this year will drive me mad though. And five episodes of Torchwood? I was already struggling with withdrawal last year, how am I supposed to survive this? Bah. Obsessions. It'll age you before your time.

Anyway, I can't spend yet another day lounging around in my pjs. Even though it is my last day of "holiday". Shopping to be done! Allonsy!

Hot water bleeding our colours

Why do I not have “Burn the Witch” by Queens of the Stone Age? This is a gross oversight, I’m sure I had it at some point or another. Also, overcome by urge to listen to “Mercy” by Duffy, which I also apparanly do not have. What is this? Has the world gone mad? I don’t ever not have something! And the new James Bond theme song! Bah.

Also, I would like to ask the Prime Minister to make good on his promise for faster internet speed. This was an election promise, I may not care about politics nor take my forced voting seriously, but seeing as you are in power and everything, we might as well get something out of it, right? Right. Now make with the high speed.

Books I intend to acquire in some way, shape, or form:
- Torchwood Archives
- Doctor Who: A Writer’s Tale
- Brideshead revisited : Evelyn Waugh
- The girl with the curious hair : David Foster Wallace
- Maurice : E.M. Foster
- Tristram Shandy : Laurence Sterne
- Speaker for the dead : Orson Scott Card
- American Gods : Neil Gaiman

Let's have some random philosophy!

… when [a man] puts a thing on a pedestal and calls it beautiful, he demands the same delight from others. He judges not merely for himself, but for all men, and then speaks of beauty as if it were a property of things. Thus he says that the thing is beautiful; and it is not as if he counts on others agreeing with him in his judgment of liking owing to his having found them in such agreement on a number of occasions, but he demands this agreement of them. He blames them if they judge differently, and denies them taste, which he still requires of them as something they ought to have; and to this extent it is not open to men to say: Every one has his own taste. This would be equivalent to saying that there is no such thing as taste, i.e. no aesthetic judgment capable of making a rightful claim upon the assent of all men. (Kant 1928, p. 52)

Let us also have some quotage -

Life is full of near misses and absolute hits, of great love and small disasters. It’s banana milkshakes and lof insulation and random shoes. It’s dead ordinary and truly, truly amazing. What you’ve got to realize is it’s all here now, so breathe deep and swallow it whole.
[Torchwood, S1, Episode 9, 'Random Shoes']

Some days are special. Some days are so so blessed. Some days nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while—every day in a million days when the wind stands fair and the Doctor comes to call—everybody lives.
[Doctor Who, S4, Episode 8, 'Silence in the Library']

Hmphg. Just love. These shows really are just that good.

Our lives are changing lanes

I decided to have a look at some of my blogs for last year, and well, a great deal really went down. Obsessions continued to strengthen, innocent stalking tendencies continued to make appearances, big moves were tentatively resolved to be made and nearly were [baby steps people].

In my 2008, there was freaking out over uni, a lot of working, a trip to South Africa and Soundwave upon my return home. I went to a bunch of random small gigs and events, also saw a few random plays at the Opera House and the Theatre Company. William Beckett cut his hair. Panic dropped the ! and morphed into hippies. The Jack Recker comic strip on Cyanide & Happiness made an impact. My bag was stolen, resulting in the acquisition of Jasper and Beckettoo. Mild lusting presented itself after Emo Boy and Mohawk Boy, the latter almost had an actual ending until girlfriend materialized. Serious lusting was done after the likes of Mat Devine and David Tennant. I met The Academy Is… boys and it was perfect. Serious obsessing was done over Doctor Who and Torchwood…oh and the Twilight saga. Breaking Dawn release party and fanfare. I fell in love with ‘Across the Universe’ and finally finished watching ‘Jericho’. I got a high distinction average for two uni classes. I came up with ‘Soliloquy’. Starbucks closed half their stores. I got my dad a Wii for his birthday and used it a lot more than he did, karma. Lots of weekends home alone. Lots of nights out. Lots of nerding out with Lizzie, and Caitlin still being around. World Youth Day and those annoying millions of pilgrims that took over the city and the mutant strains of flu they brought to the party. The Canyonero/Antichrist. Flair on Facebook! Procrastination! There was also serious pondering about the validity of moving out, redecorating, or just doing something, all of which came to nothing. There were also angsting and revelations. Then right at the end I got to gallivant around western Europe, and subsequently amble about the Musee D’Orsay and fall in love with Ireland and London. Last but not least, I got to hang out with Abbi. So in retrospect, 2008 was a great, full year.

So far 2009 is living up to the 'same old, same old' sentiment. My parents are annoying me. Mum lost her mobile. Oreo has visited the vet, got an injection and some meds, and will now hopefully get better. I'm considering embracing the flight part of the fight/flight instincts and fleeing the house tomorrow. Peace and quiet. Hmmm.

Right now though I am overwhelmed by the desire to go ice-skating. Is that weird? More importantly, will someone come with me?
